Maximizing the Performance and Longevity of Your Magnetic Cylinders

Magnetic die-cutting cylinders are commonly used in the printing industry for cutting and shaping various materials, such as paper, labels, cardboard, and plastic. These cylinders are an important part of the printing process, and proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure their longevity and performance.

Here are some key tips for caring for your magnetic die-cutting cylinders:

  1. Store the cylinders properly. When not in use, magnetic die-cutting cylinders should be stored in a clean, dry, and safe location. Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight, as these conditions can damage the magnetic material and affect the cylinders' performance.
  2. Handle the cylinders carefully. When handling magnetic die-cutting cylinders, be sure to use gloves or other protective gear to avoid damaging the surface of the cylinders or the magnets. Also, be careful not to drop or bump the cylinders, as this can cause dents or scratches that can affect their performance.
  3. Clean the cylinders regularly. It's important to keep your magnetic die-cutting cylinders clean to maintain their performance and extend their lifespan. To clean the cylinders, use a soft, damp cloth or brush to gently remove any ink or debris that may have accumulated on the surface. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the cylinders.
  4. Inspect the cylinders regularly. Regular inspection of your magnetic die-cutting cylinders can help you identify potential problems early and take steps to address them before they cause significant damage. Look for signs of wear or damage, such as dents, scratches, or cracks in the surface of the cylinders. Also, check the magnets to ensure they are securely attached and in good condition.
  5. Replace or regenerate damaged cylinders. If you notice significant damage or wear on your magnetic die-cutting cylinders, it may be time to replace them. This is especially important if the cylinders are no longer able to hold the cutting die securely or if the magnets are loose or damaged. Replacing damaged cylinders can help to ensure that your printing operation runs smoothly and efficiently.

At Rotometal, we offer a range of cylinder racks and storage solutions designed to help you store and handle your magnetic die-cutting cylinders safely and effectively. Our cylinder racks are carefully designed and constructed to provide secure and stable storage and transport for your cylinders, while also allowing for easy access and organization.

We offer a range of sizes and styles to suit different needs and budgets, and our cylinder racks are built to last, with durable materials and construction. We know this because we designed them for us to use in our manufacturing processes.

By following these tips, you can help to extend the lifespan of your magnetic die-cutting cylinders and maintain their performance. Regular care and maintenance are essential for ensuring the quality and consistency of your production.

How to be more eco-friendly with your print tooling?

We're living in a time when the world is more aware of the environment than ever before. We've seen a huge surge in products that are made with recycled materials, and we've heard about how our lifestyles can be less harmful to the planet.

But even if you've made small changes at home like switching to reusable grocery bags or recycling your plastic bottles, what about at work?

Almost every business on the planet today is aware of the importance of reducing their environmental impact. And at Rotometal we have seen that our industry has been slow to make those changes.

That's why we started to look at what innovation we could implement and create to help our customers improve their environmental impact.

Choose a supplier who is as committed as you are to improving things

When we are choosing a supplier, we will look for one who is committed to the environment. This means they should be working towards finding eco-friendly solutions that still meet our needs in terms of value, quality and speed.

They should also be committed to their customers and employees. This is a core aspect of Rotometal's approach to the future and our focus on Customer 5.0.

It's certainly the way we try to work with our customers and suppliers. We believe that if we can help them to improve their environmental impact and reduce their costs, then we are all better off.

    Innovation that helps

We've worked within our own technical departments and in partnership with suppliers to develop new production techniques. These allow us to bring game-changing innovations to market and create some unique options for customers.

We analysed our product range to see where there could be options to create a true eco-alternative.

After internal research and discussion with our suppliers, our ECO CRO Sleeves GF were created. Our traditional Composite sleeves are produced with a PET honeycomb volumetric layer and an epoxy resin in their construction.

Our newly launched ECO CRO Sleeves GF change that.

The honeycomb volumetric layer is produced with 100% rPET (recycled PET). This retains the same great weight and strength properties whilst massively reducing the environmental impact of the tool. Alone, a great innovation.

We didn't stop there though, we also were able to find a high-performance green-epoxy resin featuring 28% of its molecular structure deriving from plant origin. This replaces the standard epoxy resin from our CRO Sleeves, without sacrificing any of the fantastic properties in terms of longevity and print quality.

They're a product that has leading print performance and accuracy, retains their strength and reliability and yet are significantly more sustainable.

It doesn't stop when we sell the product

Innovation in products is, of course, fantastic. We're proud of them as we believe they can help improve our customer's businesses.

We go beyond that though. When a cylinder is damaged or is starting to reach the end of its lifecycle, what normally happens?

The purchasing team get asked to place the order for a replacement.

It doesn't always have to be the case though. Rotometal also offers services to allow you to regenerate your rotary tooling, which can extend the life of your print or magnetic cylinders. The option of refurbishing or repairing can be available, depending on the wear state. The benefits are clear. You can extend the life of your product, reduce costs and have a better environmental impact.

We have made strides to show that a more eco-friendly approach is possible and we now have the technology to make it happen. Of course, there's also a lot more to come.

It will take a lot of research and development and investment in new technologies, but Rotometal is committed to helping our customers achieve their goals and become more sustainable in the process.
